MLD for post surgical treatment of lymphedemas

Dr. Vodder’s MLD is a gentle non-invasive therapeutic technique that is effective in the reduction of swelling. In addition its benefits include the reduction of pain, a relaxation response, and an apparent enhancement of the immune system. Used as a pre/post operative procedure, MLD helps to remove congestion, accelerate the healing process, and minimize scar formation.

Dr. Vodder’s Combined Decongestive Therapy is a four-step program which is used to successfully treat lymphedemas, additionally, it has proven effective in the post-surgical treatment of edemas from orthopedic, laparoscopy, abdominal, and exploratory surgeries. This program includes MLD, multi-layered bandages and elastic compression garments, remedial and specific breathing exercises and immaculate skin care. In cases with mild edema that responds readily to the treatment, the inclusion of bandages and compressions garments are not necessary. This is common for orthopedic, abdominal and exploratory surgeries.

Patients can expect the affected limb to decrease in volume considerably after treatment. There will be a reduction of the edema, increased range of motion, reduction of any fibrosis, and an improvement in the general condition of the skin (take note: this is on a case by case basis dependent upon the diagnosis, and length of time the edema has been present).

MLD is also effective in the treatment of lower extremity problems such as swelling and prevention of varicose veins often associated with pregnancy. I would be happy to talk with you about any questions you might have about this type of treatment for your specific condition.
